15 Puzzle: rules and examples

Try 15 Puzzle at your own pace and keep its objective in view. Arrange 1 to 15 in reading order with the empty square at the bottom right. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls. Use the opening round to become familiar with the layout. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

One thing to notice as you play

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Notice the feedback after each input.

What counts as success

Arrange 1 to 15 in reading order with the empty square at the bottom right. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Check the rules when you are unsure.

Work through the instructions

  1. Select a tile directly beside the empty square.
  2. The tile slides into the gap; diagonal moves are not allowed.
  3. Use Undo to step back one move.
  4. Finish the ordered board, or choose New puzzle.

How to interact with the game

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Read a button’s label before selecting it. A new-round button replaces the current round.

A useful example

When the gap is in the last square, only the tile above it and the tile to its left can move into it. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Take a moment to compare.

Pay attention to this rule

A distant tile cannot jump across other tiles. Compare the situation with the worked example. Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart.
